Description
High Quality, intact silkworm cocoons. Can be used in many fiber arts projects, or for educational purposes.
Fiber Details:
✿ Most cocoons measure approximately 1.25 inches (3 cm) long.
✿ Each cocoon weighs approximately .7 grams.
✿ Intact cocoons – the silkworm has been “stifled” and the dried remains are in the cocoon. This allows for a continuous fiber to be reeled, or made into hankies (the cocoon is de-gummed and stretched over a frame).
✿ De-gumming cocoons and stretching them over a frame to make hankies, dyeing (use a dye for protein fibers, like acid dyes or even using flavored drink packets), stretching out the hankies into roving and spinning are all great activities to involve older children in! Or dye cocoons whole and top with an acorn cap for easy ornaments.
✿ For some photos of silkworms, please check out our blog post, An Insect Update.
Please note: These are not our home-grown, peace-silk cocoons (silkworms allowed to morph into moths and emerge from the cocoons), these are commercially produced cocoons.
